Command strips are useful — until it is time to move out.
One common cause of wall damage during move-out is removing adhesive strips the wrong way. Pulling a Command strip outward instead of straight down can tear paint, damage drywall, or leave marks that may need repair.
Before moving out, renters should carefully remove any:
- Command strips
- Adhesive hooks
- Tape
- Stickers
- Wall-mounted items
- Picture hangers
- Shelves, decorations, or organizers
Here is the safest way to remove them.
Step 1: Remove the Item First
Take down the picture frame, hook, shelf, decoration, or organizer before touching the adhesive strip.
Do not try to remove the strip while the item is still attached.
Step 2: Pull the Tab Straight Down
Hold the exposed tab close to the wall.
Pull it straight down slowly.
Do not pull it outward toward yourself.
Do not peel it away from the wall.
This is where most damage happens.
Step 3: Go Slowly
The strip should stretch as it is pulled.
Keep pulling downward until it releases from the wall.
Going slowly helps reduce the risk of torn paint or drywall damage.
Step 4: If the Tab Breaks, Do Not Force It
If the tab breaks, avoid pulling or scraping the strip off the wall.
Use a hair dryer on low or medium heat for about 30 seconds to soften the adhesive.
Then slide dental floss or fishing line behind the strip and gently move it back and forth to separate the adhesive from the wall.
Step 5: Do Not Use Sharp Tools
Avoid using knives, metal scrapers, screwdrivers, or anything that could gouge the wall.
Sharp tools usually make the damage worse.
Step 6: Document Any Damage
If paint or drywall comes off during removal, take clear photos and report the issue according to the property’s move-out instructions.
Documentation helps avoid confusion during the move-out inspection.
